Our Commitment
The excavation and shoring business involves physically and technically demanding work from all of our personnel. The work we do exposes us to various hazards and Matcon has developed and implemented a comprehensive health and safety program to minimize these risks.
In conjunction with our written policies and procedures, our program focuses on reaching employees at all levels of the company. The communication of knowledge and information is key. We publish a monthly safety newsletter which details the previous month's safety performance, training dates for employees and other safety related bulletins. As well, the minutes of our monthly safety committee meetings are distributed to all workers with their pay checks, to again raise corporate safety awareness.
Ongoing training is another key component of our health and safety program. Upon hire, a detailed new hire orientation is completed. Annually, all employees attend a day-long mandatory training session. In addition, our foremen conduct weekly tool box meetings, often using Matcon-published 'Safety Alerts' to communicate information from other sites.
We have also implemented an incentive program for all hourly workers, with rewards for accident free hours. To encourage the recognition and discussion of near misses, bonus hours towards the incentive program can be earned by the workers for each near miss report. In this way, everyone at Matcon can benefit from the lessons learned by individuals.
Statistics on many aspects of health and safety are kept and compiled annually, holding all workers accountable for their performance, input and attitude. This information also helps us recognize and address any trends in safety performance, helping reduce the impact on our personnel.
In short, keeping our personnel safe and healthy is paramount to Matcon's goal of sustaining a profitable and valuable service to the construction industry.
